Delhi: – Two other people, including former President Pranab Mukherjee, will be awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award of the country today or on 8 August. Apart from him, this award will also be posthumously given to noted singer Bhupen Hazarika of Assam and social activist Nanaji Deshmukh. The names of the three celebrities were announced in January for this honor. So far, 45 celebrities of the country have been honored with the highest civilian award ‘Bharat Ratna’. The last award was given to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (posthumously) in the year 2015. The number has increased to 48 after the announcement of the names of the three celebrities on 25 January 2019.
After the announcement of Pranab Mukherjee’s name, he was congratulated by many leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi. At the same time, Bhupen Hazarika and Nanaji have so far been awarded posthumously to 12 people. Initially there was no provision for awarding this honor posthumously, but later on since 1955, till now 12 people have been awarded this posthumously.
Bhupen Hazarika: Bhupen Hazarika, who has sung hundreds of songs including O Ganga, Bahati Ho Kyon… is worshiped in Northeast India. A temple has also been built in his memory in Guwahati, the capital of Assam. Hazarika has sung songs in Assamese as well as Hindi, Bangla and many other languages, which are still in people’s tongues.
Nana Ji Deshmukh: Nanaji Deshmukh was associated with the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. When the Janata Party government was formed in 1977, he refused to become a minister. He continued to work for Deendayal Research Institute throughout his life. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. The Vajpayee government also honored him with the Padma Vibhushan.
